On Monday, December 26, 2022, Hazel Winslow, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away at age 86 in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
Hazel was born March 16, 1936 in Cleveland County, OK. to Patrick and Bessie Plumlee. On September 17, 1955 she married Robert Winslow. They raised two daughters, Shaun and Dawn.
Hazel was preceded in death by her father, Patrick, her mother, Bessie, her husband Bob, and nine siblings.
She is survived by her daughter Shaun and husband Terry, her daughter Dawn and husband Alan, and grandchildren Amy Craine and husband Jeff, Blake Ewing and wife Julie, Tony Ewing and wife Anastaja, Ali Richardson and husband Caleb, Alex Prather and wife Ashley, Garrett Ewing and wife Alexa, Andrea Mendez and husband Jhonatan, and many great grandchildren. She is also survived by many precious nieces and nephews.
Hazel had a passion for children, gardening, volunteering, and basketball. As a young woman, Hazel started keeping children in her home, later known as Happy Times Nursery on Sandra Drive. This business still exists and is now located on Air Depot. When Bob entered the ministry in 1970, Hazel sold her day care to become a partner in ministry with Bob at Putnam City United Methodist Church in War Acres. While there, Hazel served as youth director of a large youth group. The Winslows later served at Ardmore First United Methodist Church and Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Muskogee, OK. Upon retirement, the couple attended St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. At each church assignment, Hazel poured herself into volunteering, teaching, and loving on people.
At each of their homes, Hazel raised a beautiful garden both to help feed the family, but also because she loved the beauty of nature and the process of making something out of very little. While in Muskogee, Hazel became a Master Gardner through OSU Extension which fueled her passion for creating beautiful spaces. Her backyards were appreciated for their beauty and won numerous awards and acclaim.
As a youngster, Hazel played basketball at Noble High School. People came from far and near to watch her play. The basketball court was where she caught the eye of Bob Winslow who became her biggest fan. Through the years, she coached girls teams through church leagues and the YMCA, and enjoyed showing up her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as she could still out-shoot them well into her golden days. Hazel and Bob followed Oklahoma City University Basketball for many years, hardly missing a game until health kept them away, and later became big fans of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Hazel lived out her final years at Arbor House in Midwest City where her smile and loving touch blessed many.
