Helen Marie Hoffelt died on November 27, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee. She was born in Braidwood, Illinois to John and Della (Rogers) Ghilain on August 30, 1919. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she met fellow music major Robert Oral Hoffelt. They were married in 1943. Helen taught piano on the faculty of Drake University and then privately for over 40 years.
She was a member of Delta Omicron music sorority for over 80 years and of the PEO sisterhood for more than 70 years. She was a volunteer in the early years of the Interfaith Dental Clinic in Nashville, and she was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church from 1964 - 1985. Since 1985, she was an active member of Belle Meade United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
On December 10, 2023, a gathering of friends to celebrate and remember her life will be held at Belle Meade United Methodist Church, in the church lounge at 9:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held in Wilmington, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the music fund of Belle Meade United Methodist Church.
