Helen Sosnowski

Mrs. Helen Sosnowski of Glen Spey, NY, died Friday, November 14, 2025 at her home. She was 88.
She was born November 22, 1936 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the daughter of the late Leonid and Anna Nikitina Mezencew.
Helen was married to her loving husband, Jerzy Sosnowski for 52 years until his passing in 2016.
Helen met her husband in NYC while working as a bank teller and settling in Brooklyn, NY where they raised their 3 children. Their love of nature & outdoors brought her every Summer to the Ukrainian enclave of Glen Spey, NY to see their friends, teach the children to swim, fish, canoe, go mushroom and blueberry picking and enjoy the annual local "zabava" dance festivals. Helen eventually returned to work spending the last 10 years in the NYC Dept. of Licensing retiring 2 months after experiencing the surrounding trauma from 9/11. She made her summer playground her permanent home.
Helen enjoyed gardening, cooking and knitting. She was an avid reader of books, especially suspense and mysteries like Agatha Christie. She loved listening to her favorite local Glen Spey Ukrainian radio station and other eastern European music.
She volunteered at Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church for many years and made hundreds if not thousands of pierogies to support fundraising efforts. In recent years, she grew a passion for solving jumbles and crosswords – often astounding her children at her speed. She loved feeding her birds – delighting in the arrival of the hummingbirds and Red Cardinal. She always believed that cardinals appear when angels are near.
Her family will remember Helen as an angel in their life. Her smile & warmth would light up a room. She was selfless & devoted in ways that are forever awe inspiring to those who knew her generosity near & far.
Surviving are: Her beloved children: Andrew Sosnowski, George Sosnowski and Irene Sosnowski. Daugther-in-law: Gretchen Sosnowski (George's wife) Grandchildren: Ksenia Nikitina (Andrew), Lucas Alexander and Zoe Yelena Sosnowski (George & Gretchen)
For family & friends, funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 with an 11:00am Liturgy Mass in Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 329 High Road, Glen Spey, NY 12737 with Father Fedorak officiating.
Burial will be at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey, NY.
