He was born June 7, 1934, in Arzheim, Germany to the late John and Amalie Herzenstiel Breiling.
On January 11, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, he was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Marie Demarez. Together they shared 58 years of marriage. Dorothy preceded her husband in death October 29, 2016.
Helmut returned home to civilian life after serving in the United State Navy. He was employed at Michigan Bell Telephone for the next 25 years as an overhead lineman. The out of doors appealed to him on many levels. Enjoying Pure Michigan, he hunted and fished, and spent time in Northern Michigan, especially the Upper Peninsula, near Houghton and Newberry areas. He attended St. Mary Catholic School in Mount Clemens and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church also in Mount Clemens.
He will be greatly missed by his sister Ruth Gallagher, sister-in-law Arlene Breiling, nieces and nephews, Vicki (Gary) Miglio, Mark (Patty) Gallagher, Michael (Lidia) Gallagher, Kurt Breiling, Heidi Batley and Mauri (Bev) VanWalleghem. Great nieces and great nephews Tom (Kate) Gallagher, Jonathan Gallagher, Chelsea (Nick) Hughes, Steven Gallagher, Kai Batley, Kyra Batley, Kristof Anetta, Jeremy (Pennie) Marko, Josh Marko, and many great great nieces and great great nephews also survive.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brother Richard Breiling and nephew Chris Breiling.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 12:30 pm (instate at 12 noon) at St. Peter Catholic Church, 95 Market Street, Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Military Honors rendered by the United States Navy will follow the mass.
In lieu of flowers contribution may be addressed to Veterans Tunnel to Towers or Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.

Helmut's family extends their invitation to all to join them, immediately following the mass, at Fernhill Country Club, 17600 Clinton River Rd, Clinton Township, MI 48038 for a luncheon and celebration of Helmut's life.

On behalf of the Capuchin friars, I offer prayers and condolences for the Breiling family upon their loss. I pray eternal rest for Helmut and that God's peace comfort his family in their grief. Helmut was a long-time supporter of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
