HENRY HAIGHT Obituary

HAIGHT, Henry Huntly IV Known as Tony, passed away Tuesday, December 16, at the age of 92, at his home in Beverly. Tony was born September 27, 1933, in Medford, Oregon, to Henry Huntly Haight III and Katherine Elizabeth Haight, and he grew up in the San Francisco Bay area of California. His great-grandfather, Henry Huntly Haight was the tenth Governor of California. Before joining the U.S. Air Force, Tony briefly played French horn for the San Francisco Symphony, as well as did a stint with jazz musician, Dave Brubeck. He also had an ill-fated tryout for the San Francisco 49ers. Tony led the USAF marching band and, while traveling with the band, survived a plane crash -the first of four crashes he experienced during his life of frequent plane travel. Tony graduated from the University of California, Berkley, and the Harvard Business School. With a degree in forestry, Tony spent time in the forests of the west for which he always retained a great fondness. His interest in forestry led to an early career in the forest products industry; later he consulted on forest projects around the world. While attending HBS, Tony met Mary "Mally" Buttrick Amory; they married on September 12, 1959, at Mally's family home in Wenham. Tony and Mally lived in San Francisco for a decade, where they started their family, before moving back east to Beverly. Tony bought and managed the New England -based Drake, Smith & Co. furniture business, and started family ventures, including farming, commercial fishing, and lobstering. This was affectionally known as his back-to-the-land phase. An ardent conservationist, Tony helped preserve thousands of acres of forestland for the Essex County Greenbelt and The Vermont Land Trust. In the early '80s, Tony was hired to head up the Asia branch of the international venture capital firm Advent International. Tony and Mally soon moved to Singapore and later resided in Hong Kong. Tony, who loved doing deals and helping emerging companies get a firm footing, was a firm believer in global cooperation, and later launched his own firm, Argo Global Capital. Although Tony and Mally traveled frequently, they always made time for adventurous trips with their three sons, and later, their spouses and the grandkids. These trips were some of his most treasured memories, as they are for the whole family. A big presence, Tony will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. He leaves behind three sons, Amory (Nora), Simon (Dawn Marie) and Ian (Lori); and five grandchildren who called him "Sirpa," Nicholas, Cody, Lucy, Jared, and Charlie. He was with his family and loving caregiver, Ira Brown, when he died. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mary Amory Haight, who died on October 27, 2024, at the age of 89; his sister, Janet Louch; and his daughter, Hilary. Per Tony's wishes there will be no service. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, BEVERLY. Condolences, at www.campbellfuneral.com
