Henry Hamilton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lawrence Funeral Home - Darien on Dec. 5, 2025.
Henry Davey Hamilton Died on November 4, 2025 in Darien, CT after a long battle with Prostate cancer. He was born on May 12, 1935 to Henry and Jane Davey (Walker) Hamilton in Flushing, NY. Throughout his life he was known as Davey to avoid confusion with his father. Davey was descended from the Hamiltons of Redhouse Castle, East Lothian, Scotland, and the Richmond, Mauran, and Hoppin families of Providence, RI. The family moved to Darien in 1939, and Davey attended Hindley School, which was at that time located in the wonderful, old barn-like building on the Post Road, before moving to it's present location.

A longstanding resident of Darien, CT, he also had homes in New York City and Vero Beach, FL. Davey attended South Kent School, South Kent, CT, subsequently serving as a trustee of the school. He was a graduate of Trinity College, Hartford, CT, where he was a member of St. Anthony Hall. As a young financial analyst on Wall Street he attended evening classes at NYU Graduate School of Business Administration. He Joined Guaranty Trust Company, Which shortly thereafter, in 1959, merged with JP Morgan & Company. He was to remain at this firm for his entire career, specializing in investment management. In 1979 he started a group for the purpose of wealth management for high net worth individuals and their families. A 1984 Morgan ad that featured Davey described him as the Morgan officer who "leads a team of experts who specialize in managing investments for individuals". Growing up near the waters of Long Island Sound, it was natural sailing would be a major interest. In addition to cruising the entire New England coast at various times in his own boats, he also signed on as crew in a number of ocean races, including the infamous 1966 Bermuda Race, when hurricane-like conditions swept over the fleet. Racquet sports were of special interest from a young age, especially tennis, squash, and court tennis (a.k.a. royal tennis), which he considered the finest racquet sport of all time. Salmon fishing also became a favorite activity, especially on the River Spey in Scotland. The golf courses of Scotland were a great attraction, and with a friend he made the trip there for 14 years, during which time they played all the Scottish courses on the rota for the British Open. An amateur painter for many years, Davey primarily painted scenes that attracted him on his travels, especially in Venice and Ireland, scenes that typically featured some water. At the time of his death he was a member of Wee Burn Country Club, Darien; The Racquet & Tennis Club, NYC; Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, Vero Beach; The Sloane Club, London; and The Chelsea Arts Club, London. He is survived by his beloved wife Lucy (Williams) Hamilton, and Henry W. Hamilton, a son from an earlier marriage to the late Merrie (Young) Wood. A sister, Jane Warriner, and a brother, Peter, both predeceased him. Donations may be made in Davey's memory to South Kent School, 40 Bulls Bridge Rd., South Kent, CT 06785.

A Private Interment will take place in the Columbarium at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien, CT.
