Dr. Henry Richard "Dick" Howland, age 84, of Pittsburgh, PA passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at home. He was born on December 8, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Bernard Union Howland and Eula Smith Howland. He grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio. He is survived by his wife of nearly 41 years, Veronica F. Wojnaroski.
Dick was a graduate of Portsmouth High School (1958). He held a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1962), and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (1968). He held various senior engineering positions at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation's Research & Development Center in Churchill, PA, between 1965 and 1994. After retirement from Westinghouse, he held adjunct professorships in mathematics, engineering and computer sciences at Point Park University, La Roche University and Penn State University, and was senior consultant to Indicus Corporation.
Dick was a cultured, broadly educated man, as was reflected in the breadth of his intellect and the scope of his personal interests and activities. His professional achievements covered a wide range of disciplines beyond his academic training. He had a life-long passion for music, especially for the piano. He was on the boards of several musical organizations and played the piano for services and events at his church. His interest in photography centered on portraiture. For more than 30 years, he interviewed students who were applying to MIT and also volunteered with a number of other civic organizations.
A funeral service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206, on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 am.
