HENRY MANWELL Obituary

MANWELL--Henry James. Henry James "Jim" Manwell passed away from complications of Covid-19 on Monday, July 18, 2022 while at the family's beloved lakeside cottage in Michigan. Born May 22, 1945 and raised in Saginaw, MI, he moved to the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn in the mid-70s. A noted raconteur, over the years he built friendships and community wherever he went--at his church St. Francis Xavier, as a referee with the local soccer league, with friends at the 440 Gallery, over calls with countless former school and work friends, or just walking down 7th Avenue for bagels. Jim's passions included the New York arts scene, Brooks Brothers sportswear, moderately-priced wine, and all things University of Michigan. He had a huge love for the written word: history, philosophy, all kinds of literature, and his daily New York Times (print edition). A life-long learner, Jim earned not one but *four* master's degrees--in classics and theology from Loyola Chicago, an MBA from University of Michigan, and recently in American history at CUNY Graduate Center. More than anything he loved his family. Jim is survived by his wife Anne, children Paul (Jennifer) and Katherine (Quest), and granddaughters Frances, Adeline, and Sophie. He will be missed by his family -- his siblings Terry (Kathleen), John, and Mary Agnes (John Jackson), as well as hundreds of cousins across multiple generations. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, November 5, 2022 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 225 6th Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11215.
