Henry Peter Phillips, Jr., known affectionately as Pete to his friends and family, passed away on October 19, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on December 6, 1951, in Long Branch, New Jersey, to the late Henry and Jean Phillips, Pete was a lifelong resident of the Bayshore area. He grew up in the close-knit communities of Union Beach and Keyport, where he graduated from Keyport High School. His early years were shaped by the loving influence of his stepmother, Emma, with whom he shared a special bond after his father remarried. After marrying, he and Denise settled in Middletown in 1979 and spent the rest of his life there.> Pete's life was marked by the tragic loss of his two beloved sons, Brendan in 1986 and Matthew in 2014. Despite these profound sorrows, he found strength and support in his family, particularly their mother, Denise Phillips Manier, who stayed close friends even after their lives went down different paths. Pete is also survived by his half-brothers, Robert and Charles Clayton, and stepsisters, JoAnn Ochinegro and Ellen Pangborn. His stepsister Kathleen Cardoza predeceased him. His extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews will remember him fondly for his kindness and gentle spirit.
Professionally, Pete was a dedicated truck driver, a career that spanned many years and miles. He began his journey with Overnight Transportation before continuing with UPS, where he was respected by colleagues for his reliability and work ethic. His profession allowed him to indulge in his love for the open road, a passion that extended into his personal life.
Pete was a man of simple pleasures. He found joy in coin collecting, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for history and the stories embedded in each piece. Dining out was another of his favorite activities, as it combined his love for good food with the company of friends and family. However, it was traveling that truly captured Pete's adventurous spirit. He was particularly fond of cruising, an interest that took him to various parts of the world, always eager to explore new destinations.
Those who knew Pete will remember him as a kind-hearted and adventurous soul, a man who approached life with a gentle demeanor and a quiet strength. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by the stories shared among those who loved him.
As we bid farewell to Henry Peter Phillips, Jr., we celebrate a life lived with purpose and grace. His journey on this earth may have concluded, but his legacy of warmth, adventure, and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Graveside service will take place at 11am on Friday, October 24th at Mt. Olivet Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with his sons.
