Henry Charles Proctor was born on October 18, 1942, to the late Elwood and Lucille Daisy Proctor in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the eighth of eight children in the family. At an early age,
Henry relocated to Maryland, where he resided until his death.
A Time For Worship
Henry accepted Christ at an early age as his mother was a spiritual leader and dedicated to serving the Lord. Henry was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, and later joined the Largo Community Baptist Church in
Mitchellville, Maryland.
A Time To Grow
Henry attended and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, Indiana (1960). While there, he played tennis and football in his senior year. He also attended Harry Woods High School for tailoring and dry cleaning. His tailoring teacher, Mr. Emmitt Lunford, was an excellent mentor and taught him how to pursue his dreams. He soon owned a cleaning business in Indianapolis and then moved to Maryland where he opened two dry cleaning plants. The drying routes he owned were very lucrative in Maryland, and he found joy in serving the community. Henry retired from the drying cleaning business in 2005 to pursue a real estate career with his wife, LaVaun, until she died in 2011.
Henry joined the Elks Lodge #2332 in
Temple Hills, Maryland, and during this time, Henry became Vice President "Loyal Knight" of the Elks Lodge. He dedicated his time and service to helping others and serving a community he loved. While serving in this position, he received numerous awards from the lodge for a job well done. He also worked as a transportation driver for Melwood assisting disabled persons while still serving the community.
Henry's Rottweilers, Brandy, Bear, and Zeus, brought so much love and happiness to his life; Henry and LaVaun treasured those dogs dearly.
A Time To Unite
Henry was united in holy matrimony to the late LaVaun P. Pitts on January 3, 1981, at the Friendship Baptist Church. This union produced no children, but they were overabundantly happy with a host of nieces and nephews. They were world travelers and enjoyed yearly vacations with their families. They remained married for over 30 years until LaVaun died in 2011. Henry, later on in life, adopted Alicia Perkins as his faithful and devoted daughter whom he loved dearly.
On November 13, 2023, Henry was called home to be with the Lord. He heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast." (Horatius Bonar)
Henry was preceded in death by his spouse, LaVaun Pitts Proctor; parents, Elwood Sr. and Lucille Daisy Proctor; four brothers, Elwood Jr., Harvey, Clen, and Harold; and two sisters, Mildred Rice and Mary Jean Johnson.
Henry is survived by Alicia Perkins (Charles); one sister, Lenora Johnson; one brother-in-law, Harry W. Pitts, Jr.; four sisters-in-law, Juanita (Knee) Cox (Bernard), Sherrie M. Jewell (Elton), Tawana V. McShan (Leon), and Diane S. Jones (Charles); many nieces and nephews; and a village of friends.
I Peter 1:3-4
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade."
