Henry Jonathan Sherrill, affectionately known as Jon or Doc, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, at the age of 84, following a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on June 10, 1941, in Nashville, Tennessee, Jon spent his final moments surrounded by his loving family at Four Seasons Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina.
A man of remarkable intellect and kindness, Jon dedicated much of his life to education and service. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Springhill College, followed by a Master's degree from Auburn University, and ultimately achieved his PhD in Chemistry from Louisiana State University. During the Vietnam War, he served his country honorably, reaching the rank of Captain in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea.
Jon embarked on a distinguished career with DuPont, where he worked as a chemist for 26 years. His passion for teaching led him to Hendersonville High School, where he inspired young minds as a math teacher for 14 years. There, he also shared his love for sports, coaching both the Boy's Soccer and Boy's Tennis teams to State Championships. He further contributed to the education field by teaching lab technicians at DuPont through Blue Ridge Community College.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jon was a man of faith and community. As a devoted Roman Catholic, he served as a Confirmation Teacher, Lector, and Eucharistic Minister. His compassion extended into the community through his volunteer work with Meals on Wheels of Henderson County. Jon also found joy in crafting homemade blueberry wine, a testament to his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
