Michael "Mike" Giacomaro, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on November 23 at the age of 81. Born October 9, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, Mike was known for his deep devotion to family, community, and country, and for the generous, playful spirit that defined his life.
Mike spent his final moments at home in
Hendersonville, North Carolina, surrounded by those who loved him, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. His life was marked by dedication-to his family, to hard work, and to the joy of learning, serving, and connecting with others.
A proud veteran, Mike served in the United States Navy as a submariner during the Vietnam War, stationed in Hawaii aboard the USS Archerfish. After his service, he earned an Associate of Applied Science in Banking, Insurance, and Real Estate from Suffolk County Community College, where he met the love of his life, Louise Michels, his wife of 56 years. Mike adored Louise openly-never shy about holding her hand or giving her kisses. They loved to dance together, whether at weddings or simply in the kitchen on an ordinary afternoon.
For over 40 years, Mike owned and operated Datumeg Inc., his payroll and data processing business-a remarkable achievement that reflected his dedication, resilience, and strong leadership. Beyond work, he generously shared his time and skills, always ready to help those in need.
Mike was full of affection and warmth, a jokester at heart who loved a good laugh and the playful moments that brought people closer. He cherished long drives and loved bringing his kids to the airport to watch the airplanes-a small joy that reflected both his fascination with technology and the heartfelt way he connected with his family. And a never ending sweet tooth-he loved his desserts and single-handedly kept Little Debbie in business.
A true Trekkie, Mike was an avid fan of Star Trek and all things space. He followed exploration with genuine excitement-especially when William Shatner blasted into space in real life aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket. Mike also loved planning and building things; he built his own garage, rebuilt more than a few car motors, and mapped out unforgettable family road trips-boldly taking his crew where no one had gone before.
Mike also poured himself into his community. He served as president of the East Yaphank Civic Association for 30 years, founded the East Yaphank Chamber of Commerce, and was an active committee person for the Brookhaven Town Republican Committee. He also contributed to the Brookhaven National Lab Community Advisory Council. After his Parkinson's diagnosis, he became an active member of the Hendersonville/Brevard Parkinson's Support Group, always keeping a smile on his face in the hope it would encourage others.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Vincenza (Alagna). He is survived by his devoted wife, Louise and cat Mary Margaret; his daughter Michelle (Nolan) and her husband Patrick; his sons Christopher and his wife Veronika, and Paul with his grand-dog Dozer; his cherished grandchildren Sean, Brian, Gabrielle, and Olivia; his brother, Anthony Giacomaro; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held in early 2026.
