Henry Lee Sparks

Henry Lee Sparks, age 72, of Versailles, Kentucky, passed away on June 10, 2025, at Central Baptist Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on February 8, 1953, in Paintsville, Kentucky, Henry graduated from Johnson Central High School and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1975. His impact on the mountains of Eastern Kentucky is undeniable through his work as a supervisor of reclamation. Henry dedicated his career to transforming former mining sites into safe, beautiful spaces for the people of Appalachia. With a deep love for the land and its communities, Henry developed and executed comprehensive reclamation plans, skillfully managed teams of engineers and professionals, collaborated with regulatory agencies, and analyzed site conditions, including soil and water quality. His efforts left a lasting legacy in the hills he called home. Before beginning his career in reclamation, he got his start as an extension agent in Martin County, where he established the Martin County Fair.

Outside of work, Henry found great joy in farming on the family's 300 acres in Lawrence County and spending time with his loved ones. He also enjoyed playing golf and was especially proud of scoring a hole-in-one at the Paintsville Country Club Golf Course, a moment he commemorated with a trophy he cherished for the rest of his life.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Monnie (Conley) Sparks; his son, Craig David Sparks; his sister, Carolyn; and his brother, John.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Karen; their two children, Kevin (Carrie) Sparks of Lexington, KY, and Kelly (Dr. Mitch) Flood of Hendersonville, TN; and five beloved grandchildren: Logan Sparks, Landon Sparks, Riley Flood, Bennett Flood, and Carter Flood.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at Preston Funeral Home, 136 Main St, Paintsville, KY 41240.
