Herbert Lamar Cox

Herbert Lamar Cox passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026. He was born in Slocomb, Alabama, to the late Herbert Cox and Mary Cox.

Herbert was a simple, easy-going man whose kindness and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. A hardworking and dedicated public servant, he devoted more than forty years to the Leon County Sheriff's Office, where he eventually retired. His retirement allowed him to cherish time with his beloved wife, Melanie Cox, with whom he shared forty-four years of marriage. Herbert was a longtime member of the Marzuq Shriners, most active in the Go-Kart Club, where he enjoyed participating in parades and bringing smiles to those he served.

A man of deep and abiding faith, Herbert was a devoted Christian who faithfully served the Lord for more than fifty years as a member and deacon at Crossway Baptist Church. His life reflected his love for Christ through humble service, steadfast faith, and care for others.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mary Cox, and his two brothers, Jeff Cox and Mike Cox.

He is survived by his loving wife, Melanie Cox; his brother, Jerome Cox (Ginger); his son, Dewayne Cox; his daughter, Tonya Cox Lewis; his granddaughter, Destani Lewis; many beloved nieces and nephews; and all of his cherished fur-babies.

While he will be deeply missed, Herbert's family takes comfort in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ and the assurance that he is now at peace in the presence of his Lord.
