Herbert Johnson Dye, Jr., 89, of Abbeville, husband of the late Myrtis Johnson Dye, died Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at his home. He was born in Elberton, GA, to the late Herbert J. Dye, Sr. and Vera Johnson Dye Sudduth.
A graduate of Nancy Hart High School, Class of 1954, Herbert retired from the former Milliken & Co – Abbeville Plant with 44 years of dedicated service as a member of the Development team. He served his country in the Army National Guard for four years. Herbert and his late wife, were the co-founders of Missionary Movement Church in Abbeville where they tirelessly ministered to the congregation and broader community through music and helping others. Herbert was an avid gardener and enjoyed flowers, especially roses.
In addition to his beloved wife of 70 years and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jenkins and two brothers, Milton Dye and Stephen Dye.
Herbert is survived by three children, Lee Ann Gordon and her husband, Randy, Laura Lawrence and her husband, David, and Herbert J. Dye, III; four grandchildren, Katherine Morgan (Evan), Patricia Sorrow (David), Will Gordon and Elizabeth Gordon; seven great-grandchildren, Clare, Susie, Naomi, Vera, Issac, Sophia and Edith; two sisters, Eugenia Willis of Dacula, GA and Elaine Goss of Douglasville, GA; sister-in-law, Dianne Dye of Hartwell, GA; and very special friends who were like family, Carol Norris, Nancy Fogle, Tina Norris, Gina Norris and Gloria Norris.
The family will receive friends 1:00PM – 2:00PM, Friday, December 5, 2025, at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 2:30PM on Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ronald Fowler officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The family extends their sincere appreciation to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont for their love, care and support.
The family is at their respective homes.
