Herbert Gregory Byrne, 84, of Carmel, passed away on August 9, 2024 after suffering multiple strokes earlier that week. He was born in Indianapolis on September 26, 1939 to the late Chalmer and Alice Byrne. Greg is preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris Evelyn Byrne; sons, James Byrne (Christin) and Robert Byrne; sister, Rae Cavanaugh. He is survived by his daughter, Sherry(Daniel) Agan; grandchildren, Jonathan (Aimee) Agan, Harrison (Erin) Agan, Elizabeth (David) Caudle and Benjamin (Kati) Agan; great grandchildren, Emerson, Daxton, Avalinn, Zanden, Rowan, Elouise, Solomon, Maeve, Samuel, Eleanor and Griffin. He attended Broad Ripple High School Class of ‘57 and went to work for the FBI in Washington, DC as a clerk. He moved back to Indy and went on Marion County Sheriff’s Department. He was the first deputy assigned from West 86th Street to SR 67 Mars Hill and west to County Line (now Avon line). He would back-up his buddy who had the whole outer eastside. In October of ‘63 he started his career with Indianapolis Police Department till end of May ‘94. Most of his years were as Detective Sergeant in Special Investigations. Through those years, he worked numerous part-time security jobs: Market Square Arena, the Holiday Inn and Hyatt to name a few. He then went to work for Conseco and owner, Mr. Steve Hilbert then on to IPL security on the circle. Greg was a member of FOP#86, Murat Shrine and past president of Police Club ‘74 and rode for the Police Club’s Motorcycle team. He enjoyed trying new dinner spots all over the state and vacationing. Greg was an Indianapolis Colts fan and had season tickets for several years when they first came to Indy. Greg was a practical joker and prankster. He had a dry sense of humor and loved watching people to see if they realized he was joking. He loved spending time with his new found friends at Independence Village Zionsville East, his family especially his grandchildren. A Celebration Of Life will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024 at 12:00 pm in Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home where friends may visit from 10:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 pm and a quick graveyard service at Maple Hill Cemetery Plainfield.
