Herbert Meehan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home - Bardstown on Feb. 17, 2026.
Herbert Edward Meehan, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

Born on March 14, 1934, in Queens. Ed was the son of Ruth Cook and Herbert Meehan Sr. He spent his early years growing up in New York before moving to Washington, DC for his senior year of high school. After graduation, he began working for Western Electric. In 1956, he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably until his discharge in 1958.

In 1959, Ed began a long and distinguished career with the Associated Press, where he worked for 38 years before retiring in 1997. His dedication and steady presence earned him the respect of colleagues across the country.

In 1955, while in Louisville, Kentucky, Ed met the love of his life, Doris Jean Borst, at Moons Bar. They were married in 1957 and over the next 13 years welcomed six children. The young family lived in Texas, New York, and Indianapolis before permanently settling in Louisville in 1967.

The Meehan household was filled with love and plenty of laughter. Ed was known for his wonderfully dry sense of humor, keeping family, friends, and coworkers entertained with his trademark deadpan delivery. Having grown up in a home where love and affection were scarce, Ed was determined to build something different. He never missed an opportunity to tell Doris, his children, and his grandchildren how much he loved them and how lucky he was to have them. His steady devotion and quiet warmth defined his life.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his older sister, Estelle Cenekofsky; his newborn son, Timothy Edward; and his beloved granddaughter, Alyssa Cavanaugh.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Doris; his children, Lauren, Mike (Vicki), Leslie Cavanaugh (Eric), Chris (Terri), and Todd (Christy); 12 grandchildren: Stephanie Wissing, Jacob Meehan (Brittany), Jonathon Wissing (Kay), Taylor Cavanaugh, Matthew Meehan (Alix), Ben Cavanaugh, Morgan Meehan, Paige Meehan, Claire Meehan, Lilly Meehan, Sarah DiChiara (Ryan) and Brooke Sangalli; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 20, from 3–7 p.m. at Ratterman's Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Martha Catholic Church, 2825 Klondike Lane, Louisville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alyssa Cavanaugh Scholarship Fund, c/o College Heights Foundation, 1703 Chestnut St., Bowling Green, KY 42101 (https://www.wkuchf.org/memorial-funds/alyssa-cavanaugh-scholarship-fund/ ) or to the St. Vincent DePaul Conference of St. Martha, c/o St. Martha Catholic Church, 2825 Klondike Lane, Louisville, KY 40218.

Ed's legacy of love, laughter, faith, and devotion to family will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
