Herbert E. Schumann, 89, passed peacefully on December 30, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Hammond, Indiana to parents Herbert and Helen (Helfen) Schumann and grew up in Griffith, IN.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine (Kay), sister, Marilyn Stein, and sister, Gayelyn (Ray) Hengel.

He leaves behind children, Margaret "Peg" (Peter), Pam, Lisa (John), Brian (Karen), Scott (Jennifer), Lynette (Chris), Paul (Nicole), Sandy (Don), Cathy (Jeremy), Bridget (Tim), 28 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Johnny and brother, Robert (Bob) Schumann.

Herb was a State Farm Agent for 48 years. He was also on boards of Knights of Columbus, St. James Church, St Peter and Paul Church, Serra Club and Andrean High School. He is a member of Our Lady of Queen of Martyrs.

In addition to his many work and church related involvements, he always had time to help friends and family which was always a great source of enjoyment for him.

Herb and his wife Kay enjoyed spending time with their 10 children and 28 grandchildren and many vacations.

We want to thank Northwestern Medicine and Dr. Jong Kim for the many years of treating Herb.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Andrean High School and Sharing Meadows.

Visiting will be held at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave., in St. John, on Friday, January 2, 2026 from 2-7 pm. Funeral services will be held directly at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish, 8303 W Taft St in Merrillville on Saturday, January 3, 2026 with visiting from 10:30 am until the time of mass at 11am. Entombment to follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Crown Point.
