Heriberto "Herby" Garza, a cherished son, brother, father, and friend, passed away on August 5, 2025, in his hometown of
Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on August 8, 1953, his parents were the late Ruben Garza, Sr. and Alvina G. Garza. Herby was a lifelong civil servant and was dedicated to serving others and devoted to his family and friends.
Herby's legacy began as he graduated from Foy Moody High School in 1971. He enlisted and served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Goldsborough DDG 20 Guided Missile Destroyer during the Vietnam conflict. After leaving the Navy in 1975, Herby started a 32-year career as a Letter Carrier, and he retired in 2012.
He served within the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 1259, serving as both a President and a Vice President. Herby also had the role of NALC's Congressional District Liaison for the State of Texas, a District V Board Member for NALC, and eventually, President of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). He also served in the Color Guard for the American Legion and Vice Commander and with the GI Forum. He earned many awards and recognition during his years of service.
Herby participated in the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Tejano Democrats, and served as a Safety & Health Representative. Herby was actively engaged as a lobbyist in politics and numerous fundraising activities for non-profit organizations.
He was an enthusiastic football fan and especially Dallas Cowboys fan. He also competed in chess tournaments and enjoyed going dancing with friends.
Herby is survived by his children, Chazz and Mercedes Garza, his brother, Ruben Garza, Jr., and sister, Leticia Gomez (Miguel). He also dearly loved his nephews and nieces, and his best friends, Roy and Esther Hinojosa and his favorite cat, Miss Bear.
His close friends and family will fondly remember his famous sayings: "Don't Worry About It!" and "Yeah - Yeah" His sense of humor will bring smiles in years to come. Herby will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
