Hercules Lee Johnson, Jr. departed this life on May 30, 2025 at the age of 83.
Born in 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Margaret and Hercules Lee Johnson, Sr., Hercules' life was a testament to devotion-to his family, his friends, his work, and his faith community.
As a student at Overbrook High school, he was a member of the two-time basketball City Championship team. Hercules went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965, leaving the service with the rank of Airman Second Class. He began a civilian career in the U.S. Mint and he retired in 2006 as a mail handler with the U.S. Postal Service. Known for his steadfast work ethic and punctuality, Hercules could always be counted on to arrive in his trusty Impala, one of the great loves of his life.
The other loves of his life were his wife, Regina, and his three children, Kenya, Paige, and Darren. Hercules was a deeply devoted husband and father, supporting every passion and interest his family pursued. Whether cheering from the sidelines of games, applauding at art exhibitions, clapping at music venues, or dancing hand-in-hand with Regina to the oldies, he brought boundless energy and joy to the lives of those he loved.
A man of many talents, Hercules applied the sewing skills he learned in the Air Force to upholstering boats and cars, later turning his craft into fashion by designing belts and handbags. His creativity was matched by a strong sense of civic duty-he served for many years as a block captain in his neighborhood and volunteered at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he engaged warmly with visitors from around the world.
Hercules was an avid sports fan and rarely missed a basketball, football, or tennis match. He was known for his unique sense of humor and his indomitable positive spirit. With patience, grace, and an unwavering will, he handled the hard stuff well.
Hercules is survived by his loving wife, Regina; his children, Kenya, Paige, and Darren (Cecelia); and grandchildren. He also leaves behind a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings Conway, Hedy, and Ruth.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
