Heyward E. "Gene" Sexton, age 84, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2024, in Canton, Georgia. Born on September 16, 1939, in Columbia, South Carolina, Gene was renowned for his loving and thoughtful spirit-a true servant at heart.
Gene dedicated his youthful years to education, earning a B.S. from the University of South Carolina. His patriotic spirit led him to a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, where he honorably retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Throughout his military service, which included tours in Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm, he earned many commendations for his bravery and was a proud Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Corps.
His commitment to service continued as a dedicated member of Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church in West Columbia, SC. Beyond his professional and community roles, Gene was an avid golfer, puzzle worker, an enthusiastic outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and bowling, and a man who cherished time spent with his beloved family.
Gene's legacy is defined by the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the exemplary life he led. He will be deeply missed, yet his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Annie Belle Sexton; and brother, Olyn Sexton; he is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jane Sexton; son and daughter-in-law, Tom Sexton (Cher); grandson, Grayson Sexton; brother, AJ Sexton; sister, Annie Laurie Reynolds; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2024 at the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Pastor Cliff Pace officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of choice in his memory.
