BAXTER CHAPEL-Hilda Marie Herd Tucker Smith, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed peacefully in her home on the Tucker Ridge in Silver Point, Tennessee on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at the age of 90.
She was born on January 27, 1935, in Buffalo Valley, Tennessee to the late Margaret Chambers Herd and Armstrong Herd. She attended Buffalo Valley School and enjoyed keeping up with her classmates there throughout her life.
Hilda married Billy Tucker in 1953. Together, they farmed and raised four hardworking children until Billy's untimely death on January 29, 1976. In the years that followed, Hilda went to work outside the home and watched her children grow and have families of their own. In 1983, she married Warren G. Smith of Silver Point. They farmed, spent time in Florida, and enjoyed a quiet and full life among their family and friends until Warren G. passed on May 5, 1998.
Hilda was a member of the Silver Point Church of Christ for over 65 years. She enjoyed attending services and, for many years, taking day trips with the Silver Foxes senior group. Hilda was also an avid card player. Her special friends, Lynn, Linda and Sherry visited her weekly to play in her home, and it was among her most enjoyed days of the week. For the past 25 years, nearly every Sunday afternoon, a number of her family would stop by to visit with her and one another, either in her tiny living room or front yard. The space never mattered-the value was in being together.
Hilda was blessed with a family so large that they simply cannot all be named here. Those surviving include her children, Larry (Tammy) Tucker, Rhonda Sudie (Danny) Huddleston, Pat Sponaugle Smith, and Johnny (Wanda) Tucker all of Silver Point, TN; grandchildren Lisa (Jason) Stanton, Chad (Alana) Huddleston, Josh (Tammie) Tucker, Lucas (Sara) Tucker and Billy (Chelsey) Tucker all of Silver Point, TN; Carla (Shaun) Potter of Lebanon, TN, Casey (Dustin) Williams and Becky (Tyler) Brown of Cookeville, TN and Betsy Marlow of Winston, GA and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Hilda was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law J.D. and Freida Herd and two sons-in-law Ronnie Sponaugle and Donnie Smith.
A funeral service will be Thursday, January 15 at 11 AM at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home, 532 4th Avenue South, Baxter, TN. Bro. Luke Wilken will officiate. Interment will follow in Palmer Cemetery in Silver Point, TN. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM and after 9 AM Thursday until service time at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons Tucker Stanton, Todd Stanton, Ty Stanton, Eli Huddleston, Evan Huddleston, CJ Potter, Braden Williams, Colt Williams, Cooper Williams and Cash Tucker.
