Hiram Johnson Obituary

Hiram Reynolds Johnson

Hiram Reynolds Johnson, Jr. of Chesterfield, died on January 17, 2026 after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Johnson was born in Richmond on April 14, 1939. He attended the Cathedral school and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also graduated from the University of Michigan Public Utilities Executive program.

Mr. Johnson began his career in entry level roles at the Virginia Highway Department, and rose to Deputy Secretary of Transportation in the Governor's Cabinet. He was subsequently appointed to lead the Commonwealth's Department of Computer Services. In this capacity he was appointed by a Republican Governor, then reappointed by a Democratic Governor, a testament to his leadership skill and to his talent. He transitioned to private industry in the early 1980s, and held senior leadership positions in technology, security, government relations and communications at Dominion Virginia Power until his retirement in 2000.

Despite his impressive professional accomplishments, Mr. Johnson considered his greatest success to be his family. He was preceded in death by his wife and soulmate of 42 years, Frances Norseffe Johnson; his devoted mother, Margaret Jewell Johnson; his brother, Joseph Vernon Johnson; his grandparents, Vernon and Katherine Goode; and by a host of devoted aunts and uncles who supported him throughout his life.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his four children, Laura (Wayne), Greg (Tracie), Leslie (Gary) and Gerry (Melissa). He also leaves to cherish his memory 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Emily), Lillie (Nick), Tiffany (Chris), Dillan, Graham, Zack (Jordan), Bobby, Seth, Rachael, Ella, and Carson. He was further blessed with four great grand children, Emie, Joey, Georgia and Daphne.

Mr. Johnson also considered Debra Farmer, Lujuana Koch and Wendi Johnson his honorary daughters. Steven Drew, similarly, was an honorary son, and Drew Hutson a beloved honorary grandson.

Hiram was a quintessential self-made man, and a mentor, advisor, friend and servant leader to many. He was a founding member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, appointed to the Governor's Information Technology Investment Board, and he served as a member of Chesterfield County's Crime Solvers Board. He also completed multiple terms as president of Meadowbrook Country Club, and helped to lead Oakland Hunt Club for decades as its Secretary and Treasurer.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bliley's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, January 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 4400 Beulah Rd. Burial will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Mr. Johnson's name be made to the Chesterfield Crime Solvers or to the Alzheimer's Association, or to the charity of your choice. Mr. Johnson's family also offers its heartfelt thanks to Executive Home Care, Ascend Hospice, and the staff at Arden Courts.

I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful man. It is so fitting that the picture is of him and Frances, he was devastated when she passed away. Hiram was a friend, a confidant when needed, a father figure at times, and just an amazing boss. He and I, along with Patty Campbell, sure had some good times together. Hiram made you feel respected and valued. And he sure knew how to have a good time. Rest in peace Hiram.
