Horace Atkinson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heritage Mortuary - Las Vegas on Mar. 12, 2026.
Hello, it's me, Horace E Atkinson, but you probably remember me as Mail Man. I was born on 04/15/1940, in Fordyce, AR, USA, and it has been a joy to see how the world has evolved since then. I took my last mail route on 02/13/2026. I'd like to believe that I lived my life fully and, in my unique way, left my mark on this world.

I was a dedicated man, always committed to my role as a letter carrier, a job I did for nearly 30 plus years before retiring from the USPS, Las Vegas, NV, in 2014. I was proud of the work I did, and I was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. I was a spirited man, generous with my time and resources. I loved dancing and sports, and I was involved in various clubs such as the American Legions, Fordyce Club, and "That's what Friends are for" organization. I was recognized for my service and dedication with awards like the Arkansas Traveler Award, American Legion Legionnaire of the Year, Fordyce Club President's Award, United States Postal Service Excellence, and the Faithful Service Commendation. I was also a loving family man. My family, friends and good cheer were what mattered most to me. I enjoyed gathering with loved ones, singing, and dancing.

I am survived by my brother, Ray Atkinson; my sisters, Gloria Atkinson; my children, Priscella Bowman, Jacqueline Williams, Kevin Quick-Smith, Bryzana Atkinson, and Chantel Lovett; my nieces, Kimberly Atkinson-Malone and my nephew, Brian Atkinson; my granddaughters, Ionika Joshua, Shaquail Hines, Cherish Gantt, Jacquita King, Alexis Burgess, Ashawnti Thomas, and ZeBreonna Jackson; my grandsons, Javaunte's Herndon, Lamarius Herdon, and Demetrius Burgess Jr; and my great-grandchildren, John Jr, Jayden Wilson, Jayda Wilson, Julian, Jalil, Dakari Molley, Sage Atkinson, and Tru Middleton. I am preceded in death by my parents, Booker Atkinson Sr and Amy Atkinson; my brothers, Booker Jr and Maxine (Ray) Atkinson; my sister, Blanche Battle; my children, Miranda Burgess and Dimitrios Burgess; my grandson, Reginald Slaughter; and my wife, Dorothy Burgess.

I was a member of Greenville First Baptist Church, Fordyce, Arkansas, from an early age. I served in the Junior choir and participated in other youth activities. "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11). I always believed in living life to its fullest. My faith was my guide, and I hope that those I leave behind will remember to "live their life for themselves and when you are together you can be in a position to help someone else get themselves together, otherwise, nothing from nothing leaves nothing. Respect yourself and treat people right help when you're able and you will have nothing to worry about."

My life has been a journey, and I am grateful for all the experiences, the people I have met, and the love I have received. I invite you to share your memories, stories, and photos of our time together on my memorial page. Services are under the direction of Heritage Mortuary. Remember me with joy, for I have lived my life with love. Horace E Atkinson signing off with Love.

Dear Horace Atkinson, It was good working with you those 20 plus years for the Postal Service. Being from Arkansas also and knowing some of the same people was also great. Deepest condolences to your family from me and my family.
