Horace Coleman, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2023, at his residence in Hernando, MS. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Southaven Church of Christ followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. (681 Church Road East, Southaven, MS 38671). Interment will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens. Robert Jefferies will officiate the service. In honor of Mr. Coleman's service to our country, the flag of the United States Navy, where he served as a Medical Corpsman, will be flown at Coleman Funeral Home. Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Coleman was born in Toccopola, Lafayette County, MS, in January 1928, and was the 5th of 8 children born to Sidney and Mary Coleman. His mother, Mary raised two children of her son James's, Donald and Bill Coleman then Donald's daughter, Donna. Growing up with a large family, he embraced togetherness and time spent with his parents and siblings, a gift he passed down to his own children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was definitely a family man in every sense of the word. While growing up, he had a nickname "Rooster", because he was a scraper. He loved traveling, fishing, watching Ole Miss ballgames, and attending all sporting events and extracurricular activities of his grandchildren.
Mr. Coleman was a Godly man with a servant's heart and held a devout love for God and His word. He grew up in the Church of Christ and instilled those values in his family until the day he left us. He was a member of Southaven Church of Christ and loved his church deeply. His love of God, family, and people was evidenced daily as he faithfully served everyone around him. He was involved in programs at his Church for many years: Faith and Action and The We Care Program.
Mr. Coleman was married to his wife Billie for 46 years and was her fulltime caregiver during the last years of her life until her passing in 2016. The years they spent together and the love they shared was an inspiration to so many. They traveled to every State and 3 Continents in their camper where they made lifelong memories and friends.
He was a maintenance supervisor at The Kellogg's Cereal Corp., where he retired after more than 30 years of service. He continued to attend luncheons with retirees and kept up with many of his friends and old co-workers. He was a hardworking man who loved his job and provided above and beyond for his family.
In addition, Horace was a Regular at the Sweet Potato Farm in Senatobia MS and a watermelon field just East of Hernando, he called "The Patch". He truly enjoyed delivering sweet potatoes and watermelons to many of his Church Members and neighbors especially those who were unable to get out. He was a giver and helper to all he knew.
He leaves behind his daughters; Deena Coleman, of Hernando, MS, Leah (David) Smith, of Coldwater, MS; a son, Jerry Spillman, of Greenfield, MO; and stepson, Larry Spillman; grandchildren, Ashley (Anthony) Fuson, of Vicksburg, MS, Dennis Ruby Jr., of Nesbit, MS, Austin Kyle Ruby, of Terry, MS, Jeremy (Jessica) Spillman, of Columbia, MO, Rachel (Damon) Chott, of Columbia, MO, Bobby (Melanie) Spillman, of Memphis, TN, Michelle (Mitchell) Carter, of Collierville, TN; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Ruby, Avery Fuson, Becca (Wesley) Love, Reese Ruby, Riley Ruby, Emma Spillman, Brooklyn Spillman, Noah Spillman, Jordan Chott, Hudson Chott, Caden Chott, Brice Fuquay, Autumn Carter, Tyler Carter, Cade Carter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Billie Coleman; parents, Sidney and Mary Coleman; three sisters, Robbie Shipp, Hilda Carlock and Nida Douglas; four brothers, John Roland Coleman, Sr., James Sidney Coleman, Robert (Toolie) Coleman, and Billy Jack Coleman; and one great-grandson, Caleb Nunnery.
Honorable mention to Sue Johnson, April Lark, and Rona who took excellent care of him in his home as caretakers.
Donations and memorials may be made in Horace Coleman's honor to Southaven Church of Christ, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis School of Preaching, Paragould Children's Home, Wounded Warrior Project, and The Alzheimer's Association. He was a regular supporter of these, in addition he attended the Paragould Children's Home Fish Fry each September with a tradition of stopping at the same place each year to buy a case of muscadine jelly from the same man.
Online condolences may be left on his Tribute Wall at www.colemanfuneralhome.com.

Horace´s daughter Deena and I met in 7th grade on the bus to Harding Academy. I believe the first time I met him was at Getwell Church of Christ. However, I really only grew to know him and love him in the past 20 years. Deena´s love and devotion to him is what opened my heart to his.
We have a small group of high school friends that admire, love and cherish Horace. He made us sausage balls, kept us up to date on the weather, and astonished us with his motorized trips to the mailbox and his texting abilities. For me..his love of life and his family are such an inspiration to me.
Deena, you have been and still are his angel. Love you long time girl
Love you Horace. I know you are using those wings
