In Loving Memory of Horace Perry Williams ("Rock")
Horace Perry Williams, affectionately known as "Rock," was born on August 21, 1946, to the loving union of Pearl Wright Williams and Perry Williams. A cherished son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, Horace's life was a testament to courage, service, and unwavering love.
His formative years were spent in Del Valle and Austin schools. Horace attended both Del Valle Missionary Baptist Church and Cottonwood Baptist Church, where he nurtured his faith and built community.
With a sense of pride and a desire to serve, Horace enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 13, 1965. Over his illustrious career, he dedicated 22 years, 1 month, and 27 days of honorable service, during which he performed multiple tours serving his country with bravery:
• Two tours in Vietnam: 1967 with the 25th Infantry Division and from 1969 to 1970 with the 101st Airborne Division.
• Two tours in Germany: 1967 with the 3rd Armored Division and from 1972 to 1974 with the 3rd Army Division.
• One tour in Korea from 1979 to 1980 as a PNCO with the 2nd Infantry Division.
Horace's courageous commitment earned him numerous accolades, including the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star Medal, alongside several commendations for his valiant service. His legacy in the military is a reflection of his courage, resilience, and devotion to his comrades and his country.
Beyond his military service, Horace was the proud co-founder and president of the "Buffalo Soldier" Reenactment Organization, established in September 1996 to honor the rich history of the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiments. This initiative allowed him to connect with others who shared his passion for preserving the legacy of African American soldiers, and he took great pride in educating others about their significant contributions to American history.
After retiring from the Army, Horace continued to serve his community through various roles. He worked diligently at the University of Texas and the Adjutant General's Department for the Texas National Guard, where he was known for his kindness and dedication. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post #83 and a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, reinforcing his commitment to fellow veterans.
Horace was preceded in death by his beloved parents and three brothers, Maurice Wright, Peter Williams, and Danny Ray Williams. He leaves behind a profound legacy of love and cherished memories, especially through his devoted wife, Lizzie Williams, with whom he shared 33 beautiful years. Three sons: Darrin Williams of St. Petersburg, Florida; Kevin Williams of Austin, Texas; and Charles Eric Williams of Dripping Springs, Texas will carry forward his heritage.
Horace is also survived by two loving sisters, Charlotte Beason of Miami, Florida, and Olivia Neal of Austin, Texas, as well as his brother, Michael Jones of Austin, Texas. The light of his life continues to shine through his four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and countless friends who were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit.
Horace Perry Williams will be dearly missed, but his legacy of service, love, and courage will eternally inspire those who knew him. His life was a beautiful journey filled with purpose, and he will forever remain in our hearts.
