Howard Cosman of North Port, FL, age 98, passed away on July 4, 2025. He was born in Elmwood Park, IL on July 10, 1926, son of the late Alfred and Inger Cosman.
Howard is survived by his daughter Judy Fleck, son Phil Cosman, daughter Debra Wall (Gary), daughter, Jan Cosman, six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Howard was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Inger Cosman, wife Mae (Gathman), son Dale Hanck, brother Bob Cosman, sister Inger Marie Granquist, and sister Dorothy Heinrich.
Everyone who knew Howard loved him for his kind heart and giving nature. He will be missed by his children and grandchildren who spent many hours playing Rummikub, Six Dice and Scrabble with him. His pool in Port Charlotte, FL was always a big hit with his grandchildren and great grandchildren as Howard watched them splash and swim every time they visited. Being formerly from the Chicago area, he was also a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.
Howard always had a love for farming and felt it was one of God's gifts to him to be able to make that his career. He farmed for 35 years in Carol Stream, IL feeding cattle, raising hogs and grain. His mentor for farming was his Uncle Bill Cosman who taught him well. He spent his last working years as an electrician in Local 134 IBEW before retiring to Port Charlotte, Florida with his wife Mae. Because he had such a love for farming, he continued with a garden in Port Charlotte and loved to share the vegetables he grew with others. Many would find a bag of "goodies" at their front door delivered by Howard. He took so much pleasure being able to share his love of gardening with so many!
Howard became a follower of Jesus at the age of 10 in Seattle, Washington under the ministry of Pastor Lyle Willard. He said this was the most important decision he ever made in his life. Today he is enjoying heaven because he was bought by the precious blood of Jesus. In his early adult years, Howard and family attended Medinah Baptist Church in Medinah, IL and was very involved in the ministries there. There are many stories from close relationships he formed at the church as he made lifelong friends.
Many memories from the farm are remembered as the church had many events i.e. Halloween parties, pool parties and bon fires throughout the years. In the early 70's Howard and his wife Mae were a part of starting The Village Church of Bartlett with several other couples. Once retired, he and his wife Mae became members of The First Baptist Church of North Port, FL and became very involved serving there in various ministries.
