Howard Gay Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Crowell Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory - Buford Chapel on Dec. 31, 2025.
Howard Gay, age 81, of Buford, Georgia, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, at his home at Ivy Springs Senior Living.
Howard was born on December 3, 1944, in McDonough, Georgia, to the late Oscar Sr. and Flossie Gay. He grew up in McDonough and graduated from high school in 1963, beginning a life defined by service, dedication, and quiet strength.
Howard proudly served his country in the United States Army for 20 years, retiring in 1984 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. During his military career, he served as an Infantryman and Ammunition Specialist and earned numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and three Overseas Service Bars.
After retiring from the Army, Howard continued his commitment to service. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University in 1987 and later retired from Federal Civil Service at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 2001.
Howard was a quiet man who kept mostly to himself, but he was deeply devoted to his family. Above all else, he was immensely proud of his daughter, Cindy Brown, who was not only his daughter but also his best friend and confidante. Their bond was strong and unwavering, and being her father was one of the greatest joys of his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Brown; his son-in-law, Eugene Brown; his sisters, Mrs. Onarie Scott and Mrs. Betty Gay German; his brother, Mr. Marvin Gay; and a plethora of cousins, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Sr. and Flossie Gay; and his siblings, Mr. Oscar Gay, Jr., Mr. Forest Gay, Mr. Charlie Gay, and Mrs. Mildred Gay Watkins.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, on January 13, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
Howard will be remembered for his quiet strength, his honorable service, and the deep love he had for his family-especially his beloved daughter. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
