Howard V. Halstead, 84, of Honesdale, died on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Karen Travis on August 7, 2017. The couple married on August 4, 1961.
Born on June 30, 1939 in Hancock, NY, he was the son of the late Leroy and Addie (Comfort) Halstead. He was a US Army veteran who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was a Purple Heart recipient. He worked for many years as head of maintenance at Goshen Secure Center until his retirement.
Howard was charter member of the VFW Post 1708 in Goshen, NY. He was also well known at Bethel Speedway and Accord Raceway where he and his family enjoyed racing cars. Naturally with his love of racing, he enjoyed watching Nascar. Most of all, Howard loved seeing his grandchildren and looked forward to their visits.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Lopez and husband Brian McBeath Sr. of Honesdale; his sons, Robert Halstead and wife Dawn of Woodridge, NY and Timothy Halstead and his wifeTanya of Greeley; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He is also leaving behind his beloved dog Ruby.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Michael and William Halstead and his siblings.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale at 11 am. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, 10 until the time of service.
