Howard Hanson, a cherished patriarch and decorated World War II veteran, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, at Morton Hospital in
Taunton, Massachusetts. Born on April 27, 1925, in
Canton, MA, Howard's life was marked by dedication to his country, his family, and his love of music.
Howard's journey began in the small town of Canton, where he grew up and completed his education at Canton High. His formative years were spent surrounded by a loving family and a community that would shape the man he became. After high school, he answered the call of duty and served in the United States Navy during World War II. His bravery was evident as he took part in the historic D-Day landing at Omaha Beach. His heroism did not go unrecognized; he was awarded the prestigious Army Presidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre with palm for his valor.
Returning home as a decorated veteran, Howard pursued his passion for music by studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. His talent and dedication to his craft were undeniable, and his love for music would remain a constant throughout his life.
Professionally, Howard dedicated many years to General Motors, working in the Parts Group until his retirement. His diligence and commitment to excellence were evident to all who worked alongside him. Even after his retirement, Howard's work ethic and the relationships he built continued to be celebrated by his colleagues and friends.
Howard's life was rich with involvement in various associations that reflected his interests and values. He was a proud member of the American Legion, the Blue Hill Masonic Lodge, and shared his musical talents as a saxophonist in the American Legion Band, Shriners Band, and the Grotto Band in Quincy. His melodies brought joy to many and served as a testament to his lifelong love of music.
An avid Boston sports fan, Howard's enthusiasm for his teams was infectious. Whether it was the Red Sox, the Celtics, the Bruins, or the Patriots, Howard's support never wavered, and he enjoyed sharing this passion with his family and friends.
Howard was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Schick) and a loving father to his children, Mark Hanson and his wife Geralyn of Stoughton, Cynthia Gillis and her husband Paul of Assonet, and Eric Hanson and his wife Joan of Mansfield. He was a guiding force in their lives, imparting wisdom, kindness, and a sense of responsibility. The legacy of his love and teachings will live on through them.
Predeceased by his siblings Myrtle, John, Mina, Irving, Edward, Lawrence, and Sarah, Howard's memory will be cherished by his family, including his eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His stories, his laughter, and his unwavering support will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Howard Hanson's life was one of remarkable accomplishment and profound impact. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of family, and the enduring spirit of community. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Monday January 5th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral service at the funeral home Tuesday morning January 6th at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
