Howard D. McCoy

Howard D. McCoy, 95, of Virginia Beach, passed peacefully into the arms of the Heavenly Father on September 25, 2025.

Howard was born in Jewel Ridge, Virginia on May 27, 1930 to the late William McCoy and Mary McCoy Chandler. He served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force as a firefighter. After retiring in 1970, he worked as an insurance agent for Jackson National. His career took his family on many adventures across the country, including years spent in the U.K., Alaska and Washington state.

Howard is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Anna S. (Huffman) McCoy, and two sisters: Letha Houser of Blountville, TN and Laura Wingo of El Paso, TX. Also surviving are his children David McCoy (Deb Skittlethorpe) of Puyallup, WA and Diana Golden (Kevin) of Virginia Beach; grandsons Joshua McCoy of Puyallup, WA, Zack Golden (Holly Nunn) of Arlington, VA, and Tom Golden of Seattle; and great-grandchildren Rowan and Morgan Golden. Howard was preceded in death by daughter Zoe Ann McCoy, sister Maxie Mead, and brothers Richard McCoy and Moses McCoy.

After retirement, Howard and Anna moved across the country to be close to their daughter and her family in Virginia Beach. They took great joy in tending their gardens together, and in worshipping at Haygood United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Haygood United Methodist Church (4713 Haygood Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455). Burial will be Friday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery (5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434).
