Howard Moy Obituary

Published by Coos Bay Chapel Cremation & Funeral Service from Jan. 23 to Jan. 24, 2009.

Oct. 15, 1920 -- Jan. 2, 2009

At his request, a private memorial service will be held this summer for Howard Cecil Moy, 88, of North Bend, when his family will gather to celebrate his life. Cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory in Coos Bay. An inurnment will take place in the summer at Ocean View Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Howard was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Holland, Mich., the son of Charles Edward and Sylvia (Dominy) Moy and moved to Eastside shortly thereafter. He died Jan. 2, 2009, in North Bend at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with kidney failure.

Howard and his brother, Preston, were orphaned at an early age and raised on the county farm in Fairview by Fred and Edith McNelly. He graduated from Coquille High School in 1941, and was a member of the "Greatest Generation," enlisting in the U.S. Navy the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Howard was student body president at Coquille High School and lettered every year he played football for the Red Devils. He was always proud of his achievements during the years of the Spike Leslie era. At that time he met Glenda Clinton, also of Coquille, and they eventually married during World War II. His brother, Preston Moy, also graduated from Coquille High School and joined the WWII effort as a pilot.

Glenda and Howard lived for many years in Gold Beach, where they raised their two children. Their family moved in 1967 to North Bend, where Howard lived until his death. He worked for many years at Menasha in North Bend, which he retired from in 1984.

While living in Gold Beach, Howard was master of the Gold Beach Masonic Lodge and had just recently received his 50-year pin for service in the Shrine, being especially proud of the fundraising activities over the years for the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children.

Howard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Glenda Clinton Moy of North Bend; a son, Frederick Moy of New City, N.Y.; a daughter, Kathleen Macdonald of Beaverton; grandsons, Kris Berliner of Knappa and Devon Berliner of Beaverton; great-granddaughters, Tristen and Tosha Smith of Coos Bay; son-in-law, Eric Macdonald of Beaverton; family friend, Lola Judge of New City; and his brother, Preston Moy and Britt Eipper of Banning, Calif.

The family suggests memorial contributions to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420; or the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
