Howard Ritter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith Funeral Home-Burlington Chapel from Jan. 3 to Jan. 5, 2026.
Howard R. "Cowboy" Ritter, 90, of Beaver Run Road, Burlington, WV, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 while under the care of WVU Medicine Hospice.
Born on December 9, 1935, in Salem, WV, Howard was the beloved son of the late Ward and Gerthal (Spindle) Ritter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Jean Franklin, Deborah L. Garber, John, Charles, George, Harry, and Robert Ritter.
Howard is survived by his loving wife Catherine D. (Jones) Weaver Ritter, his son, James Ritter of Salem, WV, his grandson, James "Jimmy" Ritter, and his two great-granddaughters, Janie and Jennifer Ritter. He also leaves behind his sister, Belva Junkins of Salem, WV, his best friend of 60 years, Wayne Gerst of Severna Park, MD, and numerous nieces, nephews, and a large circle of other friends who were as dear to him as family.
A 1955 graduate of Bristol High School, Howard was a hardworking man who spent his life as a truck driver and farmer, professions that earned him his affectionate nickname, "Cowboy". He served his country with pride as a member of the United States Air Force and was a committed member of the Headsville Community Church. He was a man of strong faith and deep patriotic spirit.
In his younger years, Howard was quite the athlete, playing basketball and football in high school. He carried this love for sports throughout his life, often reminiscing about his high school days. But it was his love for his family and friends that truly defined him. He was a man of great humor and kindness, always ready with a smile or a helping hand.
At Mr. Ritter's request, there will be no visitation or services.
The Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
