Howard "Howie" Shankel, 81, passed away September 18, 2024. He was born in Alliance, OH to the late Lloyd and Dorothy (Gruver) Shankel and was an Ellet High School graduate.
Howie enjoyed a long and successful career in the car business, working at both Spitzer and Klaben Dodge. After retirement he worked at Western Reserve Wire Company.
Howie's boundless young energy and zest for life was contagious and left a lasting impact on everyone. His pioneering career in the car business earned him legendary status and numerous honors. He cherished, family, friendships, hunting, cruising on his Harley and Slingshot, all while his quick wit, joke telling and showcasing his skills playing the spoons at any opportunity made every moment unforgettable.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy (Donald) Barrett and brother-in-law, Denny Lowe. He is survived by his son, Trevor Shankel; step-sons, Shane (Kristi) Slagle and Trent (Angela) Slagle; grandchildren, Briella, Keirsten, Drake, Kyleigh and Kayden; sister, Brenda Lowe; significant other, Lynn Bragg; children's mother, Gayle Shankel; niece, Jennifer Wiseman; and many other relatives and countless friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, September 29, 2024 from 11 am – 12 noon at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home, 760 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44305. A celebration of life will immediately follow at 1 p.m. at Rootstown Firehouse Grille and Pub, 4809 S. Prospect St., Ravenna, OH 44266.
