Dr. Howard Gordon Small, Jr., respected for his agricultural role in the tri-state area, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Colquitt with Rev. Craig Hartzog and Rev. Cory Thomas officiating. Visitation will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the church.
Honorary pallbearers will be all the farmers who worked with “The Dirt Dr.” throughout his farming years.
Howard was born in Whiteville, NC, in 1936. He spent many years attending school to become a Doctor of dirt- an agronomist. Howard found his way to Colquitt, GA, in 1972. He was a member of The First Baptist Church. He spent his time working hard to help many different farmers look after their crops. He also loved fishing, hunting, and watching movies. The highlight of his life was “his girls.”
Howard is survived by his wife, Jean Small; one son, Jeffrey Daniel Small; one daughter, Joanna (Wade) Everson; one granddaughter, Kaley (Chris) Moates; and one great-granddaughter, Rayleigh Moates. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Gordon Small, Sr., and Rhoda “Munk” Elliott.
