Howard Evan Vance

1948 - 2026

Howard Evan Vance, renowned Memphis musician and educator, at age 77, transitioned suddenly from earthly life on February 2, 2026 in Memphis, TN.

Born on May 5, 1948, the 3rd child of Mary Marie Schlafer, and James Howell Vance, Howard and his siblings were reared in Memphis.

Howard graduated from Kingsbury High School in 1966. By 1974, having a gift and passion for music, he had gone on to earn Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music theory & composition from the University of Memphis. Following graduation, he opened the Howard Vance Guitar Academy, in Memphis, the same year. Through Howard's leadership, the Academy became a successful business and has provided musical instruction to students of all ages for more than 50 years.

As an exceptional teacher, he was humorous, patient, and generous with his time for his students. A highly skilled and accomplished guitarist, dedicated teacher, composer, arranger, and publisher, Howard enriched the lives of many students, staff, family, and friends. He was known for bringing joy through music and a dedication to promoting music in the community.

When guitarist Howard and flutist Beverly met and married in 1989, "Duo Vance" was formed personally and professionally. For the next 36 years, they provided beautiful classical and contemporary music for countless services and events, in the Mid-South and internationally.

Remaining to cherish his memory and music are his loving wife Beverly Elliotte Vance, sisters Helen Marie Austin, Betty Jane (Michael) Von Boeckman, and brothers James Edward (Carol) Vance and Charles Frank Vance, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Thomas Robert Vance.

Until we meet again "Happy Howard", we will remember your smile, laugh, kindness, generosity, and most of all, as spoken in your own words:
"I was able to live my life doing what I loved most, Making Music."
