Hubert Milton Lawson Sr.

Hubert Milton Lawson Sr., age 86, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, at Garden View Assisted Living in Antigo, while under the care of LeRoyer Hospice, with his loving family by his side.

He was born on July 3, 1939, in the hills of Thomas Springs, Tennessee, in coal mining country. Hubert attended school through the third grade, leaving early to help his family on their farm. At just 18 years old, he boarded a Greyhound bus and traveled to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in pursuit of a new life.

While in Wisconsin, Hubert met the love of his life, Mary Pegel. The two were united in marriage on October 29, 1960. Mary preceded him in death on May 19, 2012. Together, they were blessed with two children, Carlene and Hubert Jr. "Spike."

Hubert worked for many years as an over-the-road truck driver, a job he took great pride in. He especially enjoyed bringing his wife souvenirs from each state he traveled through. In addition to trucking, he also worked in construction as a roofer and handyman, completing many remodeling projects over the years.

He raised his family in both Wisconsin and Tennessee. A true outdoorsman, Hubert loved hunting, fishing, making firewood, and spending time outside. While living in Wabeno, he farmed, raising cattle, chickens, and pigs. He enjoyed blackberry picking and making homemade jelly, and he took pleasure in whittling wooden crafts. One of his most cherished routines was daily coffee with friends at his home-promptly at 9:00 a.m.-a tradition he faithfully kept for over 30 years.

Survivors include his children, Carlene (Bill VanPay) Stram and Hubert Jr. "Spike" (Mary) Lawson; grandchildren, Amanda (Clinton) Schacht, Jeffrey (Ashlie) Firebaugh, Ryan Lawson, and Erik (Christy) Weiss; his sister, Becky Fields; sisters-in-law, Sue Lawson, Barbara Lawson, and Gladys Lawson; along with many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Mary, Hubert was preceded in death by his brothers, Arnold, Buford, Billy, James, Jimmy, "Shorty," and Ricky Lawson; and his sisters, Bonnie Brewer, Mildred Angel, and Joanne Brewer.

Graveside services will be held on June 20, 2026, at the Wabeno Town Cemetery (Forest Hill) at 11:00 am. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Wabeno American Legion Hall.
