Hugh was born October 18, 1939, to Alfred Long Sr. and Rachel (Conat) in
Sarles, North Dakota. After the 1930's economy crash the family moved about sharecropping. They ended up in Minnesota in the 1950's. Hugh graduated from International Falls High School in 1960. He took a 4-year correspondence course with CIS and completed it with a Journeyman degree.
Hugh spent 2 years in 1W service. He served as a janitor and orderly at Glenwood Hills Hospital in Minneapolis. During this time, he met the first love of his life. On July 18, 1964, Hugh was united in marriage to Karen Wiens at the MB church in Mountain Lake. The family was blessed with 2 sons, Tim and Joel. The family did many activities together including camping, fishing and hunting. The Long family gatherings would take place at the Moose Club due to 8 boys and 4 girls and their families. Everybody brought potluck. Food and fun were enjoyed by all.
Hugh and Karen attended the First Baptist Church in International Falls. For 40 years Hugh was involved in many different roles at the church including deacon, trustee, and helped to build and start the Christian School at the church. Together with Karen, they were Awana and youth group leaders. Later he became a member of Lakeview Gospel Church in Mountain Lake. Here he was a deacon, trustee and janitor.
Karen passed away in 2007. In 2010 Hugh married Myrna (Duerksen) Dick at the Lakeview Gospel Church in Mountain Lake. They decided to reside in Mountain Lake but also spent time in International Falls visiting family and being a campground host at Ranier City Beach Campground. Summers were spent gardening or keeping flowers growing and weeds not growing. They also spent time camping and fishing. To end the summer, it was the Butterfield Threshing Bee. Pam and Joel would come down and spend time at the Bee and seeing the sites in the area. With the marriage came new family members including sons, Daryl Dick and Paul Dick, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arnie and Myrt Quiring. On September 24, 2025, they celebrated 15 years together with a trip back up to International Falls to visit family. With declining health, a decision was made to move to Parkwood Place.
Hugh enjoyed stock car racing both participating, when younger, and watching. Hugh & Albert would call each other either during the NASCAR race or after to discuss their favorite Ford drivers. He also took joy in woodworking. He spent a lot of time outdoors rejoicing in camping, fishing and mowing the lawn.
Hugh was employed for 38 years, 1964-2002, at Boise Cascade in International Falls as a millwright. He spent many summers as a campground host at Greenview Woodenfrog Campground.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Myrna Long of Mountain Lake; sons, Joel (Pam) Long of International Falls, Paul Dick and Daryl Dick of Mountain Lake; siblings, Cindy (Rod) Millender, Ron (Val) Long, Karen (Ralph) Ruelle, and Ken (Deb) Long all of International Falls; sisters-in-law, Judy Long, Bev Long, and Mary Jo Long along with many nieces and nephews, in-laws, family, friends, and neighbors.
