Hugh McNally Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Craig Funeral Home on Oct. 27, 2024.
Hugh Bernard McNally Jr. January 14, 1940 – October 22, 2024. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh Bernard McNally Jr. on the afternoon of October 22, 2024, after a long battle with dementia. Hugh was one of five children born to Hugh, Sr. and Margaret McNally. He lived a life marked by hard work, creativity, and love for his friends and family. Hugh was a talented photographer by trade, spending many years supervising the photo lab at AAI Corporation. After retiring from AAI, he opened his own photo shop, specializing in custom metal-photos used for control panels and various government needs. Hugh and his wife Carol moved to Florida to be closer to his sister, Mary Ellen Hooper, as she was struggling with her health. While in Florida, Hugh found fulfilling work with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Department in St. Augustine, transporting inmates to their work release, offering life guidance and staying active within his community. Hugh cherished the time he spent with the Sheriff's Office, often telling stories about the lovely people who work there. His beloved wife Carol predeceased him on January 14, 2019, a day that held deep significance as both their wedding anniversary and Hugh's birthday. Hugh is survived by his two sons from his first marriage, James Patrick McNally and Hugh Bernard McNally III, known as Mac; two brothers, Peter and Michael; sister, Mary Gay as well as a long list of loving grandchildren. His parents and sister Mary Ellen preceded Hugh in death. He will be remembered for his charming wit, creative spirit, his dedication to his work, and the love he shared with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 30th 2024 from 10a-11a, followed by a funeral mass at 11 am in the Historic St Joseph's Catholic Church in Jacksonville, FL. My heart breaks to learn about the passing of Hugh. He was such a positive presence in my childhood and one of my Mom's favorites. May he rest in eternal peace. Love, Jane

I have many memories of Hugh too numerous to mention. But two stand out in my view. First Hugh had taken many pictures of Johnny Unitas as he neared the end of his Hall of Fame career. Some of these pictures are surely Hall of Fame photos in their own right. Second, with Win Barr's approval, Hugh took numerous pictures of my Fallston house fire in 1979. These pictures became invaluable evidence in negotiations with my insurance company. You will be missed good friend. May the Lord have mercy on your soul. Love and blessings.
