Hugh Frederick "Freddie" Sweeney, Jr., 82, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Bower's Hospice House in Beckley, WV.
Freddie, as he was known by family and friends, was born in Talcott, WV on May 1, 1941 to the late Hugh F. Sr. and Alma Louise Hamilton Sweeney.
He worked for General Motors in Pontiac, Michigan and England Motor Freight in Newark, NJ. Freddie was a former Hinton City Police officer and managed Sweeney's Wrecking Service. He graduated from Lincoln High School and attended Bluefield State College. Freddie attended Second Baptist Church in Talcott and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He did not know a stranger. One of his favorite past times was "porch-sitting" because this gave him the chance to wave to people as they passed by and chit-chat with his neighbors. Freddie loved to fish, enjoyed all sports, and was an avid animal lover. The radio was always tuned in to Summers County football on Friday nights.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Catherine Fuller and grandson, Ronell Marq Betts.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 52 years, Judith Wynes Sweeney; daughters Trisha Nicole Sweeney of Talcott, WV and Sherri F. Betts of Pontiac, MI; sister Jewell Maxine Merenivitch of Hinton, WV; special aunt Bessie Anderson of Charleston, WV; granddaughter Sascha Betts of San Leandro, CA; grandson Malik Wynes of Hinton, WV; several sisters-in-law; several brothers-in-law including special brother-in-law Jerry Wynes who he talked to every day; special friend Elmo Adkins; several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive; special canine Que.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Pivont Funeral Chapel in Hinton, WV with Rev. Matthew Saunders officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
When I Must Leave You
When I must leave you for a little while
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears.
Hug your sorrows to you through the years.
But start out bravely with a gallant smile.
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all things the same.
Feed not your loneliness on empty days
But fill each waking hour in useful ways.
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer.
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near.
And never, never be afraid to die.
For I am waiting for you in the sky!
Love,
Judith
