Aiken – Mr. Hugo Louis Defever, 79, passed away Friday, December 29, 2023.
Hugo was born in Gent, Belgium, son of the late Raymond and Denise Van Den Bossche Defever. Following his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Gent, Hugo moved to the United States and started a family.
Hugo joined Valmet of Aiken and retired with 31 years of service as the Plant Engineer. In recent years, Hugo enjoyed playing chess twice per week with the Aiken Chess Club and traveling for regional competitions. An academic at heart, Hugo was lovingly called Mr. Homework by his granddaughter Isabella.
Hugo is survived by his loving wife, Maria Hermans Defever; daughter, Cathleen (Milind) Mahajan, Houston, TX; son, Chris (Thais) Defever, Aiken; granddaughter, Isabella Defever; sisters, Magda Defever-Stubbe, Ria Defever-Renders; and brothers, Guido Defever, Jan Defever, and Geert Defever.
A Memorial Visitation for Hugo will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Aiken Senior Life Services, Meals on Wheels, 1310 E. Pine Log Rd. Aiken, SC 29803.
