Hugo "Jay" Hernandez, born on October 25, 1948, in El Paso, Texas, passed away on February 15, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a dedicated transport specialist for the New Mexico Commission for the Blind, where he served with distinction and commitment.
Jay was a proud family man, survived by his loving spouse, Louella Hernandez, his daughter Jacqueline Evans, and his son Joban Smith. In addition to his immediate family, Jay leaves behind many extended family members, and friends. His passion for life was palpable, particularly in his interests in cars, especially Pontiacs and GTOs. He spent many fulfilling years as a car salesman at Quality Pontiac in Albuquerque, earning numerous accolades for his exemplary performance in the automotive industry.
An ardent sports enthusiast, Jay cherished his love for football, remaining a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan. His dedication to the team was matched only by his desire to experience the thrill of a NASCAR race and to attend a live rock band performance later in life. During his college years in Oklahoma in the 1960s, Jay pursued architecture, but his heart always remained in the fast lane, whether it be through cars or the excitement of the football field. He fondly recalled meeting some of his favorite Cowboys players in the 1970s, having had the good fortune to be in the right place at the right time.
Jay's spirit and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Carlos A. Hernandez, and Mother, Alicia Holguin
