Our dearest mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Ida Lou Kailakanoa Hoapili Smith went to be with her loving Savior Jesus on February 27, 2024, at Pohoiki, Hawaii. She was born to the late George and Ida Hoapili on September 14, 1935 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ida Lou is preceded in death by her husband Merrill Smith, sisters Alexandrina Patrick, Edith Hanohano, Lillian Hanohano and granddaughter Kristabel Esparza.
Ida Lou grew up in Kaimuki and in 1964 she moved to Lahaina Maui with her family. She worked for the Sheraton Maui, and soon opened her own business in Lahaina town "Ida's Flowers" at the Lahaina Marketplace. She was very creative with her flower arrangements and flower leis; she also had a talent at sewing beautiful quilts for family and friends. Mom enjoyed traveling to visit family on the mainland; her best time was riding the Amtrak. Ida liked swap meets and bargains. She had a special gift of "talking story" with people and passers-by.
In 1997 she moved to Pohoiki Hawaii with her husband Merrill where they both built their family home called "The Mill". Merrill and Ida established a Christian camp and shared their camp with numerous churches.
Ida Lou is survived by her seven children: Charles (Deborah) Jenks,
Terrie Lou (Adolfo) Esparza, Albert (Janet) Jenks, Paul (Bobbie) Hoapili, Victor (Susan) Hoapili, Tracy (Rachad) Galimba, Trudy (Jim) Kistler, 22 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, four great-greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who enjoyed their visits to Aunty Ida's house.
Celebration of Life will be on April 30, 2024, at 12:00 at Pohoiki, Hawaii and at Hawaiian Memorial Park on May 2, 2024, at 11:00 at Kaneohe, Hawaii.
Rest in Peace, Mom, we love you!

John 16:22 "Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice and your joy no one will take from you."

Mom, everytime I hear the Amtrak whistle blowing across the cotton fields in Socorro Texas I'll be thinking of you riding the train into El Paso to visit us and how your grandkids enjoyed meeting you at the train depot. Many of the friends you made here at church always ask about you and remember your invitation to Pohoiki. Love you Mom
