Ida Mendes

Ida Mendes, 94, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. Born on September 24, 1929 in Cumberland, RI, she was the daughter of the late Fernando and Maria (Albuquerque) Lourenco.
Ida is survived by her three children, Kathleen (Mendes) Rebelo of Berlin, Antonio Mendes, Jr. of Farmington, and David Mendes of Simsbury; her five grandchildren, Brittany L. (Rebelo) Huben of Fairfield, Isabella A. Mendes of Newington, Toby A. Mendes of Simsbury, Mckenna I. Mendes of Simsbury, and Davy P. Mendes of Simsbury; along with her sister Madeline Aleixo of Wilmington, DE, and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Antonio Mendes; her brothers, Albertino Lourenco and John Lourenco, Sr.; and her sisters, Linda Costa, Anna Machado, and Alice Rebelo.
Ida was an active member of the Portuguese community and enjoyed singing and dancing in the Rancho in Cumberland, and was also a founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford.
She was an avid baker, fondly remembered for her Portuguese Biscoitos (Boiscotti), Filhos (Donuts), and Chouriço (Sausage) bread. She loved walking at Westfarms Mall and volunteering at Elmwood Senior Center with her husband, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Calling hours will be Friday, June 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Hartford. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
