Idell Eunice Kirby was born on April 27, 1952. The world was doubly blessed when twins Idell and Eunice Kirby were born at McKeesport Hospital-a single embryo that became two inseparable souls. Idell and Eunice shared a bond so deep that their lives were woven together until Eunice's passing in September 1991. Raised by her loving grandparents, Eunice and Ollie Kirby, Idell grew up surrounded by the warmth of an extended family. Childhood was filled with laughter, shared meals, and a close-knit community where "all the kids belonged to everyone." She and Eunice, along with a long list of cousins and friends, spent their days playing, learning, and growing together. Idell always said you could tell Eunice was the "older one," and she cherished the lessons and memories they created side by side.
Idell graduated from McKeesport High School and went on to earn numerous certificates in administration. She devoted her career to serving others through organizations such as POWER (Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery), The House of Cross Roads, and the Program for Female Offenders. Her passion for humanitarian work took root in San Diego, California, where she followed her twin in 1978. She worked at a youth home, and she celebrated milestones, such as purchasing her first silver-and-black Chrysler LeBaron-her pride and joy. One of her fondest accomplishments was flying her grandmother to San Diego to see the ocean for the first time.
Though Idell faced challenges, including struggles with addiction, she embraced recovery in 1995. She lived her life with gratitude, faith, and purpose. Through NA, Idell lived life on life terms for 30 beautiful years. She often said the three things she cherished most were her sobriety, her family, and her God through Narcotics Anonymous; she found not only healing but also an extended family that walked beside her in grace and love. In 2009, Idell married Willie Jones, and they shared 10 loving years together until his death in 2019.
Idell was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lesley Alon Kirby; grandsons Hakim, Shyheim, and Avontae; and great-granddaughters Ela, Julaya, and Harmonee-her greatest joy and legacy. Idell's sisters, Darlene Burns (and her sons Eddie and Ricky), Gail Burns, and Annette Burns all preceded her in death, and now all five sisters are reunited in heaven, line dancing together as Big Ma rocks in her chair, smiling proudly. In her final days, Idell was surrounded by love-laughing, singing, eating, dancing, and even wearing her niece's wig with joy. She treasured a sleepover and pizza party in the hospital with Barbara, Elaine, and Sherida, a heartfelt conversation with Pastor Truss, and, most of all, precious moments with her daughter. Idell's life was a testament to resilience, love, and faith. Her journey on earth has ended, but she departs with peace, embraced by her Savior and reunited with those who went before her. Her love lives on in the hearts of her family and friends, and her story reminds us all that even in the face of trials, grace and joy prevail. This journey has been a blessing, and I love you all, but my ride ends with my Savior taking me home.
