In Loving Memory of Imogene Gayle Thom
May 31, 1935 - March 16, 2025
89 Years
A Life Remembered
Imogene "Jean" Gayle Thom, age 89, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at the long-term care center at Mercy Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Her journey through life was marked by warmth, kindness, and an unwavering spirit that touched the hearts of all who knew her.
Born on May 31, 1935, in Primghar, Iowa, Jean was the cherished daughter of Donald and Lillian Nicholson. Growing up on a rural farm in O'Brien County, Northwest Iowa, she developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. As a child, she found happiness in working on the farm, playing basketball, and spending sunny days as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool.
Jean graduated from Primghar High School in 1953 and pursued her education at the University of South Dakota before earning a business degree from the American Institute of Business (AIB). It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Francis William "Bill" Thom, who was working at the Green Giant packing plant. Their love story began, leading to their marriage on August 18, 1956.
Together, Jean and Bill built a beautiful life, starting their family in Gregory, South Dakota, where their two children, Raymond and Deborah, were born. Their journey took them to Valentine, Nebraska, and Denison, Iowa, before finally settling in Centerville, Iowa, in 1963, where they would create countless memories together.
Jean dedicated many years to her career at Iowa Southern Utilities, where she worked in the billing department, first part-time while raising her children and later full-time until her retirement in 1995. She was a devoted mother, always present at her children's activities, and later embraced the role of a loving grandmother to her "adopted" grandkids, David, Derek, and Desmond Becker, along with caring for their beloved dog, Buddy.
A long-time member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Jean served as treasurer for many years, demonstrating her commitment to her community and faith. In retirement, she volunteered at the Lord's Cupboard and the Iowa Southern Retirees Group, finding joy in helping others. Jean had a passion for word puzzles and was an avid fan of game shows, particularly "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Price is Right." One of the highlights of her life was a memorable trip to California for her 70th birthday, where she had the opportunity to see Bob Barker in person and dine at the renowned Spago restaurant.
Jean is survived by her beloved husband, Bill, and their two children, Raymond (LeAnne) of Rochester, MN, and Deborah of Henderson, NV. She is also remembered fondly by the Becker family-Dave, Deb, David, Derek, and Desmond-who were an integral part of her life.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Roderick, who resided in Pahrump, NV.
As we celebrate Jean's life, we remember her as a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished friend. Her legacy of love, kindness, and community service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace, forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 28, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church in Centerville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mercy One – Long Term Care and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com or www.facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome.
