Ingrid A. Callaghan, age 71 of Middletown, Delaware passed away peacefully at home on Monday January 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family following a long, brave, and courageous battle with cancer. She was the loving wife and college sweetheart of Patrick F. Callaghan. Married on June 5, 1976, they shared 49 years of marriage. It has been said that Pat will forever be in Ingrid's debt for picking him as her life partner as he won a lifetime lottery and he had no idea he won.
Ingrid was born on September 25, 1953, in Bayreuth, Germany, the daughter of the late Ludwig Schreiber who passed away in November 2009 as well as the late Garlinde (Reiner) Schreiber who passed away in July 2016.
Ingrid attended and graduated from Piscataway High School, Piscataway, New Jersey in June 1972. Following her high school graduation, she attended and graduated from King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in May 1976 with a BA in German.
Following college graduation, Ingrid embarked on several employment opportunities to include Visiting Nurses Association, 1988 through 1990; Our Lady of Fatima from 1990 through 1996 and finally The University of Delaware where she was the Assistant to the Chair of the college's Geography Department from 1996 until 2013 when she retired. Additionally, Ingrid loved volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul Society, Hope Dining Room, and Little Sisters of the poor, all affiliated with St. Margaret of Scotland parish. Ingrid also enjoyed volunteering with Marydale, part of the Catholic Charities of Delaware. Ingrid was an avid camper who loved spending time outdoors with her best friend from college.
In addition to her husband Pat, Ingrid is survived by her son Michael and his spouse David of Odessa, Delaware.
Ingrid was the embodiment of strength and perseverance in everything she did in this world. Her smile and laughter could light up the rooms she walked into, and she would always leave a lasting impression on the people whose lives she touched. She was a loving wife to her husband Patrick and a loving and dedicated mother to her son Michael. She will be eternally missed.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Fraser Road, Newark, Delaware 19702 with the Reverend Edward Ogden, OSFS officiating, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a contribution to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, Office of Philanthropy, 4000 Nexus Drive Suite W3-300, Wilmington, DE 19803 or online by clicking here.
