With great sorrow for our loss and bittersweet gratitude for the gift of her in our lives, our family announces the passing of our kind, brave, strong, loving, caring, unimaginably generous and adored mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Ingrid " Penny" Germann. She passed unexpectedly at her home in Largo, Florida on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at the age of 82, after a life filled with love and family.
Born Ingrid Deneke in Celle, Germany on August 9, 1942 she immigrated with her family to the United States in 1951 and took residence in the Bronx New York, where she later met and married Joseph T. Germann in 1959. Together, they built a business and raised a family, moving several times before settling in Bloomingburg, New York. After her divorce, she moved to Florida, where she remained for the rest of her days.
"Penny" ( nicknamed as a teenager for her red hair) passionately loved her family, family get togethers, her beloved dogs, knitting, reading, playing games, talking politics, shopping and receiving her daily Amazon package deliveries. She was proud of her German heritage and truly loved the United States. For a period of time, she led the Camp Fire Girls as a leader to many aspiring young minds and took children living in underserved communities into her home through the Fresh Air Fund. She shared her love through providing many interesting experiences and opportunities.
Penny leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories to her three children Sandra Johnson (Michael Corso) of Seminole FL, Suzanne Scarzafava (Michael) of Summitville, NY, Steven Germann (Kelly) of Rio Rico, AZ as well as her grandchildren Danielle Johnson (Matt Reilly), Ryan Scarzafava (Cassaundra) and Alyssa Scarzafava, great grandchildren, Noelle Scarzafava and Cecilia Scarzafava, as well as several beloved step grandchildren, and great grandchildren who all affectionately called her "Omi".
She was predeceased by her parents, Elsa and Gerhard, her brother Gerhard, her ex-husband Joseph T. Germann, her son Joseph J. Germann and step grandson Eric Hosking, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
In honor of her final wishes, Penny's remains will be buried at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the ASPCA or the Cure JM Foundation.
Grief is not the result of experiencing loss, it is the result of having experienced love. We will carry her memory and love with us until we meet again.
