Iona Walcott Ifill (also known as Ms. I) was born in the beautiful Island of Barbados on October 29th, 1933, to Geraldine Phillips. Mom received her formal education in the parish of St. Michael. She worked as a caretaker for many years while raising her 6 children with her husband, Cleophas Ifill.
Mom immigrated to the United States in 1971 with the help of her aunt Carmen, hoping to make a better life for her family. She worked as a housekeeper and nanny for many years and was able to bring her family to the USA in 1976 and 1978.
Mom's last job was being a nurse's aid at the Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged in the Bronx, NY.
She was a very hard worker, dedicated, loving, full of spirit and life. She loved people and would give the blouse off her back to help another person. She was the kind of person that when she won some money or got a little extra money, she would share it among her children. She never kept it all for herself. She also helped and encourage others to immigrate to the US by giving them room and board until they could establish themselves. She was just that kind of person.
Mom moved to Florida in 1999 after she retired from the Jewish Home and Hospital and settled in Coconut Creek until 2020 when her health started to decline. She moved to Port St. Lucie and then resided at The Cabana at Jensen Dunes, an assisted living facility where she was able to happily live out her last years. Mom drew her last breath on February 26th, which ironically is the birthday of her first-born Irvine.
Mommy is survived by 5 of her children – Irvine, Sonja, Patricia, Rudolph, Stephen. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Also mourning her loss are sisters, Rosita Walcott (NY) Norma Redwood Sawyer (England). Son-in-law Samuel Jeremiah, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Mom is at peace with her daughter Beverley, her mom Geraldine (mama), sister (Marjorie), brother (Edwin) and numerous other family members and friends that went on before her. She will be sadly missed.
