The Life Story of

Ira C. Smith

“Sonny”

Ira C. Smith, affectionately known as “Sonny,” was born on February 11, 1938, in Dallas, Texas,

to the late Ennie and D.L. Smith. From the very beginning, Sonny’s life was rooted in faith,

family, and a deep love for community.

As a young man, Sonny chose to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. After his

time in the service, he devoted much of his life to his church, where he served faithfully as a

Deacon. His commitment to God and to his church family was unwavering, and he gave of

himself wholeheartedly in every role he held.

Professionally, Sonny worked many years with the Dallas Independent School District until his

retirement. Even after his career, he continued to live a life of service, this time from his own

front porch, where he became affectionately known as “Papa” to the neighborhood children who

gathered around him for wisdom, stories, and laughter.

Sonny's life overflowed with deep family bonds and enduring love. Though he was preceded in

death by his beloved sisters Doris Jean, Louise Goss, Etoise Smith, and Delora Holmes, along

with his dear son Ricky Anderson, his legacy of love lives on through those who will forever hold

him close to their hearts.

At the heart of Sonny's world was his beloved wife and soulmate, Patricia Smith, who shared 28

beautiful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and devotion. Patricia remains his greatest

treasure and the keeper of their countless precious memories together.

Left to treasure his memory and carry forward his spirit are his devoted siblings: Cleophus

(Linda) Smith, Kenneth Smith, Laverne Conley, his cherished sister-in-love Jacquelyn Anderson,

and his beloved brother-in-love Oscar Holmes. Sonny's greatest joy came through his four

children, who will continue to honor his memory: Cassandra Williams, Sharlene (Ray) Rollins,

Sadie Smith, and Sharod Smith. From here, Sonny’s love multiplies on through his 13

grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished relatives.

Sonny also cherished his loving extended family circle, including Michael Smith (who preceded

him in death), Cleophus Smith, Gary (Carlene) Smith, Christopher (Tina) Smith, Danyelle Smith,

and Shellee McClure, and 14 grandchildren. He was blessed to be embraced by his dear mother-

in-love, Pearl Etta McVey, who welcomed him as her own son. Each carries within them the

precious gift of Sonny's love, wisdom, and the countless beautiful memories they shared together.

Though Sonny has departed this earthly life, his presence, kindness, and faith will forever live on

in those who knew and loved him.
